Which one should you choose?

Choose Markup Hero if

  • You annotate PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as well as screenshots, all in the same editor.
  • You want to start right away in the browser with no account, then share a link others can add their own notes to.
  • You work in Google Drive or Slack and want to open files there straight into an annotation tool.
  • You prefer paying once: the $199 lifetime plan replaces a subscription.
  • You use Linux, where Markup Hero has a desktop screenshot app in beta alongside its Mac and Windows apps.

Choose Awesome Screenshot if

  • You need to record your screen and camera, not just capture still images.
  • You use Safari, Edge, Brave or Opera and want a browser extension made for that browser.
  • You want a native iPhone app rather than a mobile web editor.
  • You take a lot of quick screenshots for free: its free plan allows up to 100, compared with 25 markups on Markup Hero's free plan.

Pricing compared (as of November 2026)

Markup Hero has a free Basic plan with 25 markups, annotations that stay editable for 24 hours and uploads up to 8 MB. Premium is $10/month, or $3/month billed yearly ($36/year), with unlimited markups and annotations that stay editable forever. Teams pay $4 per user per month on the annual plan, and there is a one-time Lifetime plan for $199.

Awesome Screenshot lists prices in USD with a free plan, a Basic plan for unlimited screenshots and a Professional plan for unlimited screenshots and recordings. Billed yearly, Basic is $5/month and Professional is $6/month. Billed monthly, Basic is $6/month and Professional is $8/month. It also sells team workspace plans.

Screen recording: where Awesome Screenshot is ahead

Awesome Screenshot is a screen recorder and a screenshot tool in one. Its site says you can record both your screen and your camera, and even the free plan includes up to 20 recordings at up to 720p, while Professional raises recording to 4k. You can also annotate while recording and trim videos.

Markup Hero does not record video of any kind. If you explain things with short walkthrough videos, Awesome Screenshot covers that and Markup Hero does not.

Screenshots, PDFs and documents: where Markup Hero focuses

Markup Hero is built around marking up still content. Beyond screenshots and images, you can import a multi-page PDF, upload several images at once, or paste screenshots as new pages, then export everything as one PDF. The free Google Drive app opens Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, images and PDFs straight into the editor, and the Slack app does the same for files shared in channels and direct messages.

Editing tools include text, arrows, lines, shapes, pen, highlighter, blur for sensitive details, signatures and crop. The Magic tool copies text from any area of an image or PDF to your clipboard.

Where each one runs

Awesome Screenshot offers browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Opera, Yandex and Vivaldi, plus desktop apps for Windows and Mac and an iOS app.

Markup Hero runs in any modern desktop, tablet or phone browser. For capturing, there is a free Chrome extension with full page screenshots, a Firefox add-on, and small desktop screenshot apps for Mac, Windows and Linux (beta) that open each capture in the browser editor. There is no Safari extension and no native mobile app, though the editor works in Safari and mobile browsers.

  • Chromebook: the Markup Hero Chrome extension and editor both run in Chrome, so nothing else needs installing.
  • No account needed to try it: open Markup Hero and start marking up.

Sharing and working with others

Both tools let you share a capture with a link. Awesome Screenshot also lets you save to your own disk and connects to tools such as Trello, Slack, Asana and Jira. Markup Hero share links show a thumbnail preview in email, Slack and social posts, and people you share with can add their own annotations or duplicate the markup to edit their own copy. You can control sharing and privacy settings for each markup, and organize your history with titles, tags, favorites and collections.
