Which one should you choose?

Choose Markup Hero if

  • You mark up screenshots, images and PDFs in the same place and send them all the same way, as a link.
  • You want arrows, shapes and blur on a PDF page or a screenshot without a paid plan.
  • You work on a Chromebook or a borrowed computer and want an editor that runs in the browser.
  • You also mark up Google Docs, Sheets and Slides through the Markup Hero Google Drive app.

Choose Adobe Acrobat Reader if

  • You fill in PDF forms often, and want Fill & Sign to recognize the form fields for you.
  • You want native apps on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android, not a browser editor.
  • You review long documents with sticky notes, underline and strikethrough tied to the text itself.
  • You may later need to edit the PDF's own text and images, convert files or redact, which paid Acrobat plans add.

Pricing compared (as of November 2026)

Adobe Acrobat Reader is free to download and use with no subscription. Editing the text and images inside a PDF is not part of Reader and needs an Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro subscription. Adobe shows the current price of each paid plan, billed monthly or yearly, on its Acrobat pricing page. Adobe also sells Acrobat Pro 2024 as a one-time purchase with three years of desktop access.

Markup Hero has a free Basic plan with no credit card: up to 25 markups, annotations editable for 24 hours and 8 MB per upload. Premium is $10/month, or $3/month billed yearly ($36/year), with unlimited markups and 50 MB per upload. Teams is $4 per user per month billed yearly, and Lifetime is $199 one-time.

What free Acrobat Reader can do

Reader is a solid free choice for PDFs. Adobe describes it as best for people who mainly need to view, print and lightly annotate PDFs. See Adobe's Acrobat Reader page for the full list.

  • Comment with sticky notes, type text on the page, highlight, underline, strikethrough and draw freehand, on desktop and mobile.
  • Fill in forms and save them, and sign by drawing, typing or uploading an image of your signature.
  • Share a PDF so reviewers can view and comment without logging in.
  • Works on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, and in a web browser through the Acrobat web app.

What needs a paid Acrobat plan

Adobe lists these as Acrobat Standard, Pro or Studio tools rather than Reader tools: editing text and images in a PDF, creating and converting PDFs, compressing files, and sending and tracking e-signatures in volume. Redacting sensitive information is listed under Acrobat Pro. If your job is to change the words in a PDF, not just mark it up, you need paid Acrobat, and Markup Hero is not a replacement for that.

Where Markup Hero fits better

Markup Hero is for marking up and sharing, and PDFs are only one of the things it opens. You can take a screenshot with the free desktop apps or the Chrome extension, paste screenshots in as new pages of a multi-page markup, and send one link. The text, arrow, line, rectangle, oval, pen and highlighter tools work the same on every page.

Blur, image to text with the Magic tool, signatures and PDF export are all on the free plan. People you share with can add their own annotations, or duplicate the markup to edit their own copy. You can try it now without an account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Adobe Acrobat Reader free?

Yes. Adobe says Acrobat Reader is free to download and use, with no subscription, for viewing, printing, annotating, filling in forms and signing PDFs. Editing the text and images in a PDF needs a paid Acrobat plan.

Can I edit the text of a PDF in Acrobat Reader?

No. Adobe says text and image editing is not available in Acrobat Reader and needs Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro. Markup Hero does not change a PDF's own text either: it adds annotations such as text, arrows, highlights, blur and signatures on top.

Can I blur or redact part of a PDF for free?

In Markup Hero you can permanently blur sensitive information on the free plan, on PDF pages and screenshots alike. In Adobe's lineup, redaction is listed as an Acrobat Pro feature, not a Reader feature.

How do I share a marked-up PDF for feedback?

In Reader, use Share, and Adobe says reviewers can view and comment without logging in. In Markup Hero, copy the share link; people you share with can add their own annotations, and the link shows a thumbnail preview in email, Slack or SMS. Both work well for quick reviews.

Can I mark up a PDF on a Chromebook?

Markup Hero runs in Chrome, so on a Chromebook you can open the editor, import a PDF and mark it up with nothing else to install. Adobe also offers an Acrobat web app that works in web browsers. See how to annotate a PDF for the steps in Markup Hero.

Can I sign a PDF for free?

Yes, with either one. Acrobat Reader lets you draw, type or upload an image of your signature and save the signed file for free. Markup Hero lets you add signatures to PDFs on every plan and export the result as a PDF.
