PRO TIP: Freedcamp is a really impressive software, but it’s missing one essential feature. Click here to scroll to that part of the article right now.
The free version offers pretty much all the basic project management features you need to start with, along with a simple and straightforward user interface.
But why should you choose Freedcamp for your project management needs? This article answers just that. Dive in to find out everything you need to know about Freedcamp!
Getting Started With Freedcamp
Freedcamp is ideal for small to medium-sized businesses that are looking for an easy-to-use project management tool. To get started, you can create a free account on Freedcamp using your email address. Freedcamp also offers the option to sign-up using your Google and Facebook accounts.
Once you’ve added your name and set a password, specify a Group Name and Project Name, select the applications you want (calendar, milestones, and others), and then go straight to your Dashboard or invite users if you want.
In the default view of your dashboard, you will find four sections, namely:
- My Work
- Important Updates
- Projects
- Weekly Overview
You have the option to customize what is displayed here. The “My Work” section displays the tasks and milestones assigned to you, along with any upcoming events. The “Important Updates” section displays new assignments, @-mentions in discussions, and updates in created items.
The “Projects” section shows all the projects, which you can sort by recent, alphabetical, favorites, or a custom order. If you scroll down, you will see the “Weekly Overview” section, which sums up your calendar for the week.
There is a drop down window in the top left part of the window that lets you search and choose a project. At the top of the screen, you will find the Home, Projects, Tasks, Milestone, Calendar Widgets boards at the top of the screen. Moreover, there is a drop-down menu where you can choose which project to work on at the top left corner of the dashboard.
The interface is quite simple and easy to navigate. You can easily create a new project, group, or global team and get started with Freedcamp.
The Missing Freedcamp Feature - In App Image and File Annotation
Here's the use case. You're creating project management tickets and tasks effortlessly in Freedcamp. One of your co-workers posts a comment and attaches a screenshot showing some new UX for an upcoming release. You immediately decide you want to provide feedback on the image – right there, inside Freedcamp.
Sure, you could download the image, upload it to an editing tool, add some annotations like arrows, callouts, boxes, highlights, etc. Then download the file and re-attach it to the comment thread in Freedcamp. That's a lot of steps.
There is a much better way. The Markup Hero annotation API. Just click the "Annotate Image" button directly inside Freedcamp and instantly add your annotations there. Click done, and your changes are reflected immediately in the thread. It's almost magical. Here's a video showing how it works.
But don't take our word for it. Go ahead and try it for yourself. Here is a live demo showing a mock Freedcamp project ticket with Markup Hero's annotation API integrated directly. Click the annotate button, add whatever markup you like, click done and see the magic first hand.
Planning Your Projects
Planning projects in Freedcamp is a breeze and ultra flexible. Here are some highlights of the software.
Scheduling Tasks
Freedcamp offers tools like Task Lists, Gantt charts, and Kanban Boards to plan and schedule your tasks in advance easily. You can also divide larger tasks into smaller ones to make it easier for your team to work on the project.
Project Templates
At times, you might find yourself repeating the same steps to create new projects. Freedcamp allows you to turn an older project into a template and use it to create new ones quickly.
Managing Tasks
Freedcamp is not just about building out high level projects. The entire task management and calendaring system is second to none.
Calendar
You can use the calendar board to view all your items in one place. You have the option to toggle between daily, weekly, and monthly views to get an overview of all your pending work easily.
Time Tracking
Freedcamp lets you track the time your team spends on individual tasks. This is very useful if you are charging an hourly rate. You can then create an invoice from the app based on this time.
Private Task
The “Tasky” feature lets you make personal or confidential tasks private so that you don’t have to use a different tool for managing those tasks.
Mobile application
The Freedcamp mobile app is available for both iOS and Android, allowing you to receive updates and manage projects on the go.
Collaborating With Your Team
Collaborating with co-workers has never been easier with Freedcamp. Project deliverables will never fall through the cracks again.
File sharing
Freedcamp lets you upload, store and organize all the files required for your projects. You can also comment directly on a file or upload different versions of the same file, making it very easy for your team to work together.
Communication
Apart from the comment feature, you can send private messages to your team or @mention them regarding individual actions.
Discussions
You can discuss with your teammates on a centralized platform using the discussion tab. You’ll be able to create threads and communicate with specific teams or groups at once.
Milestones
Teams work better when they have specific goals to look up to. Use the Milestones feature to group multiple tasks or lists and set a specific deadline for these tasks. This goal will show up on your team’s milestone section and will help them keep on track.
Share Passwords
If you need to manage multiple passwords for secure files and share them with your team at times, you can do that easily using the password sharing feature.

Final Thoughts
As a project management tool, Freedcamp is as straightforward as it can be. You can navigate its features easily and work together with your team efficiently. But if you’re expecting a vibrant user interface and visually appealing features, you are most likely to be disappointed.
In an overall comparison, it doesn’t really stand out from its competitors, even when you consider its paid features. But one thing that does stand out is its comprehensive free plan. You can find a number of competitors offering all of its features, but not many offering them for free.
So if your project management needs are limited and you’re looking for a budget-friendly solution, Freedcamp can be a great tool for you.
However, as we point out, Freedcamp is missing file annotation. If you’re an Freedcamp client, and you like the Markup Hero API integration for Freedcamp, please contact customer support and ask them to integrate Markup Hero!
